About This Course
Use this guide if you are seeking to refresh your knowledge or learn new facts about counseling techniques, issues and approaches prior to taking the NCE exam. The lessons contained in this guide will help you better understand human growth and development topics, abnormal development, identity and relationship development, and various counseling theories and types. Other areas covered in this course include school counseling practices, family and group counseling methods, counseling assessments, counseling research methodologies, and legal and ethical issues. You can expect to encounter all of these topics when sitting for the NCE exam.

About the Exam
Many states use the NCE to assess the abilities and knowledge level of potential counselors. Many states requires that candidates pass this exam to be eligible for counselor licensure. There are 200 multiple-choice questions on this computer-based exam, covering six domain areas. Domains cover such areas as clinical focus, treatment planning, professional practice, and counseling interventions. A total of 160 of the 200 questions are scored. A modified Angoff method is used to score the exam, so minimum NCE scores vary for each exam version. The time limit for the test is three hours and forty-five minutes.
